Meet Our Staff


Keith Sanders, PT MHS SCS CSCS

Head of Sports Performance

DSCN2875Keith has drawn upon his experience working as a Physical Therapist and Strength and Conditioning Coach, most notable for the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Ambush, to guide the development of the programs at The Athlete’s Edge.  He continues to work extensively with professional athletes from the MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL and professional soccer leagues as well as numerous high school and collegiate athletes.


Clinton Tanner, MEd USATF

Sports Performance Director- O’Fallon

Training Style:

Clinton brings over 15 years experience coaching athletes of all ages in speed, agility, strength and conditioning programs.  He is a specialist in functional training techniques that incorporate core stability with correct movement patterns.  Clinton has worked with athletes from the MLB, NFL, Division I, Division II college football, baseball and soccer.  Some of his clients include former St. Louis Cardinal Kyle McClellan, NFL player Neal Rackers, professional runner Serena Burla, Neal Lamark Brown of Kansas State, and Ryan Ward of Southern University.


Clinton’s journey into the fitness world started back in college.  He was a decathlete on the track team and used every tool that was at his disposal to help improve physically.  Clinton has taken that knowledge and applied it to teaching Physical Education and coaching high school athletes.  He then started a personal training company focused on helping athletes reach their full potential.

Colby Hughes

Sports Performance Director- Crestwood

Colby Hughes brings his knowledge and experience of sport-specific training to The Athlete’s Edge. A graduate of the University of Missouri-St. Louis with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, Hughes is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and has advanced certification in the area of speed and agility. Originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2001, Hughes pursued collegiate baseball, playing one year at St. Louis Community College-Meramec and three years at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He also played one year of collegiate basketball at UMSL and two seasons as quarterback for the Springfield WolfPack, an arena football team. He is a leader in program development at The Athlete’s Edge and has contributed extensively in our Testing Protocols used to evaluate and individual athletes’ programs. He also uses his extensive knowledge as adjunct instructor in fitness at Missouri College.

Damon Burkhart

Sports Enhancement Specialist


Damon grew up in the St. Louis area and was a three-sport athlete throughout high school. He continued on to Missouri Baptist University, where he was an All-American baseball player and held the school record for stolen bases until recently. He served as an assistant coach and strength/conditioning coach for the baseball team for three years. He played professionally for four years in the Frontier League, where he was an All-Star second baseman in 2002. Burkhart earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, an educational master’s degree, and an educational specialist degree from MBU. He also is a certified strength and conditioning specialist.

Marc Tiernan

Sports Enhancement Specialist

Marc Tiernan brings a wide variety of athletics experience to The Athlete’s Edge. He was a three-sport athlete in high school, competing in football, wrestling, and track and field. Tiernan attended the University of Central Missouri on a football scholarship and lettered for four seasons with the Mules. He went on to play three seasons of professional indoor football for the Mid-Missouri Outlaws (APFL/CPIFL), earning All-League Honors each season. Tiernan earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Central Missouri, graduating with honors. He then earned a master’s degree in sport and athletic business administration from the University of Central Missouri. Tiernan is a physical education teacher and high school track and football coach and brings a variety of experience related to fitness training having taught college weight training courses, group fitness classes, team athletic development, and personal training sessions.

Scott Szarek

Sports Enhancement Specialist

Scott is a knowledgeable trainer with an apt for pushing athletes to their max. As a two sport athlete in high school and a college baseball player at the University of Missouri – St. Louis he is well aware of what it takes to succeed.  He has personally trained with professional football and baseball players.  Scott originally started out training with The Athlete’s Edge and has remained part of the company since.  He has been training athletes for several years and enjoys helping other athletes in achieving their dreams.
